I also don't understand why our school days are only 6 hours long. My sister on Long Island (NY) teaches at schools with 6.5-hour long days.

By George Morse

The town’s budget for fiscal year 2011 and the creation of a new senior center building committee are just two articles facing voters when Seekonk convenes for its town meeting Monday night. The meeting’s warrant includes a total of 21 articles ranging from budgetary matters to zoning issues, capital purchases and a land transfer. Here are some of the highlights of Monday’s articles.

A sample ballot is available at the town's website. Even if you are not interested in the candidates, consider making the effort to get to the polls and vote in favor of the debt exclusion. If this ballot question fails, the burden will unfairly fall on only the households that pay the trash fee.

If this measure passes, the cost will be spread among all taxpayers, business and residents alike. And unlike the trash fee, it will become a tax deduction.

The Banna Fire Station Saga

I couldn't stick around for the Fire Chief portion of the BOS meeting last week, so i got the details in the Seekonk Star Article today. I am a little perplexed at the Chiefs statement that he will need an additional 8 Fire Fighters to staff that station.

I didn't think the issue with fire coverage was that we did not have enough fire fighters. I thought the issue was where they started from. Can't they just be spread out among the two stations?

From the Sun Chronicle

Quote:Town meeting voters reject green initiative

SEEKONK - Voters approved a meals tax and a hotel room tax this week at town meeting, but rejected a proposal that would have allowed the town to qualify as a "green community."

The taxes could bring in as much as $400,000 in extra revenue to the town.

The green community initiative would have asked town boards to pursue the goal of meeting five criteria to reduce the town's energy usage. ...

Keep special election!!

I just heard that Ted Kennedy is asking Massachusetts lawmakers to reverse the 2004 law that would require a special election for replacements. At the time, Romney was governor and lawmakers did not want him to have appointment priveledges. If Kerry vacated for the Presidency, the Dems did not want to risk losing that seat.

Not surprising the push is now to reverse that decision.

Any thoughts?

Junk science exposed among climate-change believers

Quote: It was announced Thursday afternoon that computer hackers had obtained 160 megabytes of e-mails from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in England. Those e-mails involved communication among many scientific researchers and policy advocates with similar ideological positions all across the world. Those purported authorities were brazenly discussing the destruction and hiding of data that did not support global-warming claims.

Public Schools begin the Indoctrination of our Children

Maybe we can find an exception for George Washington, but I cannot think of any time that I have ever heard school children singing praises to an American President in a Public School, or at any other time for that matter.

When I expressed my concern about my child participating in the President's speech to the children, this type of activity is exactly what I was afraid of.

I don't now where the school is that the video was taken, nor do I know what class this was being taught in. ...
