PostConsolidation of veterans’ agent job is news to them

Quote:
SEEKONK - When the board of selectmen voted not to re-appoint former town veterans’ agent Donald Kinniburgh earlier this month, they said they had a plan. Both Town Administrator Michael Carroll and former selectmen chairman John Turner said they’d talked to town officials in Rehoboth who would be willing to regionalize and split the position of veterans’ agent between the two towns. Mr. Carroll said Rehoboth veterans’ agent William Saunders would be retiring in four months and Seekonk could save upwards of $30,000 by consolidating the position.

But if you ask Mr. Saunders and Rehoboth Town Administrator David Marciello, they’ll both tell you they have no idea what Seekonk officials are talking about.

“It’s not going to happen,” Mr. Saunders told The Star.

“I don’t know what’s going on in your town. There’s some rumor flying around and I think people are overreacting to it,” Mr. Marciello said. “The town of Rehoboth is not consolidating any position with anybody.”

Seekonk moves to fill veterans' agent post
BY JIM HAND SUN CHRONICLE STAFFFriday, June 5, 2009 2:59 AM EDT

SEEKONK - The town will begin advertising for a new veterans' agent next week and hopes to hire one soon, selectmen Chairman Francis Cavaco said.

Cavaco said there has been some concern about the vacancy in the post and selectmen want to fill it immediately.

Two boards will be asked to interview candidates after the position is advertised in local newspapers and on cable access channels, he said.

Selectmen then will hire an agent from a short list of finalist compiled by the boards that do the interviews. Cavaco said the new agent must be approved by the state.

Cavaco also said the salary of the position has been negotiated down from more than $50,000 to $33,850 a year. The title of the position will be veterans' agent and human services outreach because the agent also will deal with applications for fuel assistance and other forms of aid, he said. The position has an opening because agent Don Kinniburgh was not reappointed last March.
